UNITED STATES SIXTH FLEET
SIXTH FLEET COMMANDER HOSTS RABBI SIEGEL
Vice Admiral Edward h. Martin, USN, Commander Sixth Fleet, met recently with Rabbi Seymour
Siegel, Executive Director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council. The meeting took
place on board the Sixth Fleet Flagship, USS Puget Sound (AD 38), in its homeport of Gaeta,
Italy.
Each year since 1979, the United States Holocaust Memorial Council has coordinated federal
and state ceremonies honoring victims of the Holocaust in conjunction with the Days of
Remembrance. The Days of Rememberance, an event designated by the President, is held
during the anniversary of the World War II Warsaw ghetto uprising.
One of the topic discussed between Vice Admiral Martin and Rabbi Siegel was the inclusion of
United States Navy ships in the observance of the Days of Remembrance.
The United States Sixth Fleet is composed of approximately 30 ships, over 100 aircraft and
25,000 sailors and Marines. The fleet has been the primary U.S. Naval force in the
Mediterranean since World War II, and includes the U.S. contingent of the Multi-National
Peacekeeping Fore in Lebanon as well as supporting forces at sea.
